Felixstowe Road is a long narrow site of garages. Archio have designed two rows of houses in a mews street style with a shared landscape play street. During this project Archio had to overcome the constraints of the underground culvert in order to deliver a pedestrian focused landscape that fosters community integration.
The project is the second collaboration with London Community Land Trust, following their successful work at citizens House in Lewisham.
Working with LondonCLT and Greenwich Citizens Housing the schemes delivers nine genuinely affordable homes on Felixstowe Road in Abbey Wood.
Throughout the project there has been a strong emphasis on community engagement. Archio and Greenwich Citizens Housing worked closely with local residents through workshops and steering groups to understand their needs and aspirations for the site. This collaborative approach ensured that the final design reflects the community's vision and strengthens existing neighbourhood bonds. A major element of this process was allowing local people to vote for their preferred architect, choosing Archio.
Materials were carefully selected for low carbon impact, with recycled bricks used to accentuate the entrances. PV panels are proposed on all homes for maximum solar gain and all homes will be mechanically ventilated. The design also features an urban allotment and fruit/vegetable gardens will be available for community use.
"To actually be working with architects and the local residents at such an early phase - pre even getting the site - is kind of radical. It's not white wash participation, it's real and also the most fun part of being part of a community group like this."-Jake Sherwood, Greenwich Citizens Housing
